I recently found this video from How To Rap YouTube Channel by Drew Morisey. If you want to learn some basic principles on how to promote your rap music on social media websites, you might want to watch this video.
Key points from the video:
1) Don’t be an elitist.
Don’t be the guy who thinks he’s too cool to use social media. Remember, everybody these days is on social media (Twitter, Instagram etc.), people find new music on social media websites, and that’s pretty much how information spreads these days. If you don’t want to use social media, you are pretty much setting yourself up for failure.
2) Don’t just post about your music.
You might think that constantly posting about your music is the best way to promote your music. It’s better to have a variety of content in your social media posts, whether it’s something funny, or something more serious. Not every post on your social media accounts has to be a promotional one (i.e. about your music). Posting stuff other than your music (like funny videos/images, giving your opinions about current events etc.) makes people see you as a real person and not just another rap artist. Basically, this is what Gary Vee refers to as using the “native language” of the platform. On Instagram, you got to use the language of Instagram, on Twitter, you got to use the language of Twitter, etc.
3) Consistency.
Even if you do the right things on your social media, it’s useless if you do it rarely. You need to post relatively often in order to keep the attention of your followers/fans, let them know you exist. If you only post rarely, people will forget about you, and when you make a promotional post, they might not see it, or even ignore it. It’s all about visibility here, consistency keeps you visible… the more you manage to stay on their radar, the better.
